About

Why This Site Exists

The New York City Subway is one of the oldest and most complex transit systems in the world. Yet most stations display only navigation and service information.

This project asked a simple question:

What if riders could learn something meaningful while waiting for their train?

The Research

Over ten weeks, archival research, funded by a Temple University CARAS student grant, identified stations with the strongest storytelling potential.

Stations were selected based on high ridership, pre-1930 construction, breadth of historical fact types, clear visible connections within the station, and sufficient volume to sustain rotating content.

Facts were rewritten using a short format: Hook → Detail → Why It Matters.

The goal was clarity, accuracy, and broad appeal.

Audience Focus

Each fact was evaluated for resonance with everyday commuters, occasional riders, tourists, and transit enthusiasts.

Technical details were refined to emphasize narrative, visibility, and emotional connection — without sacrificing accuracy.

The Result

186 curated station stories designed for digital signage and public engagement. A subset of these facts is included on this website.
